Does Perfectionism Kills Self Esteem and Self Confidence?

Do you know anyone who is a perfectionist? Or are you a perfectionist yourself?

prefectionIn the past, I always seem to have the misconception that people who seek perfectionism are people of high self esteem and self confidence.

After all, it does make sense for a perfectionist to have high self esteem, isn’t it? If not, how will s/he ever be able to attain perfection?

However, I found out that there is nothing perfect in this world, especially not a human. No one can ever be perfect in every area of their lives. Not even the most successful people that I know of.

Yes, it is true that everyone has within them the strengths to help them attain their goals. However, by the same token, everyone has within them some weaknesses that make them look weak.

It is alright to be weak.

It is alright to not to do things perfectly the first time we tried it.

It is also alright not to know something.

And most importantly, it is alright not be perfect!

In fact, perfection is just an illusion, an unachievable goal.

A perfectionist may look as if s/he is someone of high self esteem and confidence, however as a matter of fact, s/he is not.

As mentioned earlier, no human can ever be perfect. After all, there are always many areas for improvement.

Also, a perfectionist is someone who tends to avoid the unknown waters, is pretty resistance to change and avoids areas of improvement in his or her life.

In addition, they are people who like to stay within their comfort zone, unwillingly to venture out into the new worlds.

Now, although perfectionists are able to excel in certain areas of their lives, they also tend to neglect other areas as well. And those neglected areas are often the causes of the struggle in their lives.

And after having said so much, is perfectionism really that bad, really that worthless?

Well, perfectionists do have their strengths too. One of their admirable strength is their determination to succeed once they set their heart to accomplishing something.

Once their heart is set to achieve something, you can be sure that they will be able to achieve it no matter what it takes to them to.
However, even so, I still don’t really encourage going for the perfectionists’ mindset. Instead, excellence in everything we do is what we should really seek for.

Self confident people are people who don’t resist changes; instead they welcome them for they recognize the fact that in order to bring improvements into their lives, they will have to change.

Even if that means they experience some temporary defeats in the process, they will still persist in their quest for continuous improvements.

No self criticism.

No fear.

No guilt.

Instead, they always have with them strong, burning desire to overcome all obstacles in their way to achieve their goals.

Remember: Failures are better teachers than success. ;)

Be driven by your passions, your desires and your goals and not the need to hold on to perfection.

Great changes usually don’t happen overnight. However, with great plans, persistence and perspirations, they are truly possible.

Don’t you think so? :)
